MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Staying in Vermont after graduating from college could help students save thousands in loan repayments.

Applications are opening soon for the Green Mountain Job and Retention Program.

It awards Vermont college graduates $5,000 in loan relief if they live and work in Vermont after graduating. The program is aimed at keeping young people in the state and growing the workforce.

The grant comes as the Trump administration is reversing Biden-era policies on student loan forgiveness.

“I do think a program like this has more power and meaning because for a student for whom loan payment assistance is important, this becomes one of the only ways they can obtain that,” said Scott Giles, the president of the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation.

Last year, 240 students received the grant. Applications open in early July.
