SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sioux City first responders are lacing up their ice skates for a charity hockey game in November.

A team from Sioux City fire, police and EMS will be hitting the road to Lincoln, Nebraska for a charity hockey game on Sunday, Nov. 16. They will be playing against first responders from Lincoln, all in the name of good fun and fundraising.

A portion of the ticket sales will be going to two charities: the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the Lincoln chapter of the First Responder Foundation.

“So FRF Lincoln really focuses on providing for first responders and their families and veterans,” said Erika Thomas, the public information officer for the Lincoln Police Department. “They do a lot of different things, whether it’s wellness training, connecting first responders with competent, culturally competent counselors, family outings, just lots of great things for our community where they can help and give back to first responders. Then also benefiting MDA. So it’s a great opportunity to help both of those causes.“

This year’s game will raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in honor of 6-year-old Nebraska ambassador, Isai Soriano, who was recently diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive and life-limiting condition that affects about 1 in every 3,600 male infants. It weakens muscles needed for movement, breathing, and heart function. While there is no cure, treatments can help slow its progression and provide hope for families like the Sorianos.

There will also be fire trucks, police cars and other first responder vehicles at the game in Lincoln.

Now, if you can’t make it to Lincoln for this game on November 16th, there is one planned for Sioux City as well. The Sioux City Musketeers put together the first charity hockey game a few years ago and have another game planned featuring Sioux City first responders early next year.
