Opposite Pindel was West Bridgewater senior Ryan Nunes, who threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for another, as the two QBs combined for nearly 800 passing yards and eight total touchdowns.
On to Saturday’s action, which featured a dozen MIAA football games and some NEPSAC openers.
As has been the theme of the short season, Saturday was a big day for quarterbacks, headlined by Michigan-bound junior Peter Bourque, a Hingham resident who threw for 210 yards and totaled three touchdowns in Tabor’s 37-6 road win over Williston Northampton.
Haverhill junior Michael Bayko, who had to win a preseason battle for the starting spot, threw for 287 yards and three scores in a 28-26 loss to Beverly, while Sharon junior Brady Shuffain threw for 206 yards as the Eagles won, 30-20, over Wareham. It was Sharon’s first win in 22 months, and came after a heartbreaking offseason.
Matt Porter and John Tlumacki were in Sharon to capture the sights and sounds as the Eagles played their first home game since last year’s Thanksgiving game was halted early after Rohan Shukla suffered a traumatic brain injury, which still leaves him homebound.
▪ Joe Allen, Gloucester — The senior quarterback stuck to the ground, rushing for four touchdowns and 103 yards to defeat Falmouth, 42-20, and push the Fishermen to 2-0.
▪ Tabby Lopes, St. Mary’s — The field hockey senior posted her fifth straight shutout to open the season, blanking Bishop Stang, 1-0, after posting donuts against Andover, Monomoy, Peabody, and Danvers.
▪ Wylie Roossien, Phillips Andover — The North Carolina-bound girls’ soccer senior scored a goal, but her six assists were what powered an 8-4 victory over Rivers.
▪ Three-star recruit Vincent Osazee, a Boston native who plays for Reason Prep Academy, commited to play Division 1 basketball at Pacific. He has reclassified to the Class of 2027.
▪ Wachusett senior Jaelynn Scott, after leading the program to its first state title with 31 points and 14 rebounds last March, announced she will play women’s basketball at Tulsa.
▪ Natick senior outfielder Jack Weierman, who also plays with the New England Ruffnecks, announced his commitment to play baseball at Skidmore.
▪ Springfield Commonwealth Academy has added 7-foot-2-inch English center Nick Wild, a junior who also will play with BABC.
▪ Cushing guard Ryan Moesch, who also plays for the Middlesex Magic, will announce his college decision at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. He is deciding between Providence and Siena.
