NEWARK, N.J. – David Ismail and Andrew Millar scored Saturday night for the University of Vermont men’s soccer team, which survived another tough test and extended its unbeaten streak to 21 matches.

The Catamounts collect three points in the America East conference by earning a 2-1 victory over NJIT. UVM improved to 8-0-3 overall and 2-0 in league play by beating a 2-5-3 Highlanders side that beat the Cats in the 2023 conference tourney.

“Good road win,” Vermont coach Rob Dow said. “Credit to coach (Fernando) Barboto and NJIT for a good performance and game plan against us.”

Vermont got on the scoreboard first by scoring in the 18th minute after Nico Loebus worked his way toward the penalty box and passed to Ludvig af Ugglas, who sent the ball to Ismail in front of the net. Ismail, displaying his signature athleticism, orchestrated a beautiful volley by using his right foot to fire a shot toward the top right corner. It marked his fourth goal of the season, leaving him tied for the team lead with Max Kissel.

The Highlanders generated one of their best scoring chance of the match in the 71st minute when Sergio Martinez Cubel fired a shot on net to the far side. Vermont keeper Niklas Herceg was there to stretch out and make a diving one-handed save, batting the ball out of bounds and forcing a corner kick to keep NJIT scoreless.

The Catamounts doubled their lead in the 76th minute, as Philipp Kühn fed Millar through the middle of the box. Millar wasted no time recording his second goal of the season by firing the ball into the back of the net, giving the Catamounts a two-goal lead.

NJIT’s Jake Rubis broke up the shutout in the 89th minute, but the damage was already done as Vermont held on for the hard-earned road victory.

Millar tied a game-high with two shots on goal, while Kühn tallied his second assist of the season. Af Ugglas recorded his first career collegiate point.

Herceg made five saves on Saturday, tying his season-high. Toby Grant and af Ugglas were the lone Vermont field players to play all 90 minutes. UVM had seven corner kicks, compared to NJIT’s two.

The Catamounts stay on the road as they prepare for their final non-conference matchup of the regular season. Vermont will travel to play Harvard at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a game that will be broadcast on NESN.

“Full focus on Harvard now to finish out this two-game road trip strong,” Dow said.
