BALTIC, Conn. — Vermont best high school golfers made the trip down to Mohegan Sun Golf Club to compete in the New England High School Golf Championships on Sunday and Monday.
The boys tournament took place on Sunday with Fairfield Prep’s Bobby Rosati, Gardiner’s Jack Quinn and Portsmouth’s Grey Gagnon pacing the field at 2-under 69.
U-32 freshman Bubba Chamberlain was tied for fourth place in the tournament with three other golfers at 1-under 70.
Chamberlain, who won Division II medalist honors in the Vermont state championships earlier this month, had a birdie on the first hole, but really shined on the back nine, where he sank three straight birdies from 11 to 13. He was 2-under on the back.
South Burlington’s Jack McDougall was tied for 20th, at 5-over 76, burying a birdie on 9.
Mill River senior Mattie Serafin, the Division II medalist runner-up, tied for 29th, shooting 7-over 78. Serafin had a birdie on 11 and and on 14.
Otter Valley senior Jackson Howe tied for 36th at 8-over 79. Howe had birdies on 5, 6 and 18.
Harwood’s Pyke Nelson was tied for 39th at 9-over 80 and had birdies on 12 and 17. Teammate Chase Ladabouche was 57th.
Windsor’s Jake Smith was one of the golfers tied with Nelson at 9-over. CVU’s Cooper Guerriere shot 10-over.
The girls took center stage on Monday with Westford Academy’s Maddie Smith winning the championship by shooting 4-under 67. Smith had two eagles and two birdies in her round, where she bested the nest best golfer by six strokes.
CVU’s Rylee Makay, Burlington’s Klara Bronz-Russo and Paine Mountain’s Mary Yacavoni also shot 21-over.
Makay carded four pars, Burlington’s Klara Bronz-Russo had a birdie on the first hole and Yacavoni had four pars.
Rice’s Lily Collins shot 23-over and CVU’s Stella Rakochy shot 24-over, among a handful of other Vermont golfers.
MANCHESTER — The Woodstock field hockey team bested Stowe in the Division III semifinals Monday night at BBA’s Friendship Field.
Betta Cirovic had a hat trick for the Wasps, while Marley Olmstead and Grace Perreault also scored. Hayley Williams scored for Stowe.
Woodstock plays top-seeded Montpelier in the Division III title game on Friday at UVM.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Fair Haven alumna Emma Ezzo continues to add to her already impressive resume, earning Little East Conference women’s soccer Goalkeeper of the Week after the Vermont State University Castleton women’s soccer team had its second 3-0 week of the season.
Ezzo posted three shutouts in the three wins this week as the Spartans earned 1-0 wins over Bard College and LEC opponent Rhode Island College, and posted an impressive 4-0 win on senior day against Maine-Farmington.
The senior posted 15 saves through the three contests, with seven against Bard, six against Rhode Island College, and two against Maine-Farmington. After surpassing the all-time career saves record two weeks ago, she now sits at 389 saves all-time and currently has a career-best .833 save percentage on the season. Her three wins this week give her seven on the season, and 19 wins over her four-year career.
Ezzo and the team look to pick up another LEC win on Wednesday, October 29, as they close out the regular season at Dave Wolk Stadium, where they host Keene State with kick off set for 7 p.m.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jess Smithson of the Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team earned her first Little East Conference accolade of the season as she was named the Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 26.
The Spartans went 2-0 on the week, taking down Plymouth State 2-1 at home on Tuesday before downing UMass Dartmouth 4-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Smithson played roles on both ends of the field, as she recorded a goal and an assist in each of the squad’s wins.
The senior now ranks third on the team offensively with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She leads the team defensively with 11 defensive saves.
PITMAN, N.J. – Josh Peguero of the Vermont State University Castleton football team earned the second New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 26.
Peguero led the team in a competitive 48-20 loss to Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon. The first year was efficient on offense, racking up 107 yards on six receptions and one touchdown.
The Middletown, N.Y. native also pitched in three kick returns for 51 yards.
This marks Peguero’s second conference nod after he collected the first honor of the season on September 8, after scoring one touchdown with 47 yards in the team’s 16-12 win over Westfield State.
He now leads the receiving corps in yards with 222 on 18 receptions. He also has a squad-best two receiving scores.
Peguero and the Spartans will hit the road on Saturday as they travel to Kean University for a 1 p.m. NJAC matchup.
MANHEIM, Pa. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team has been tabbed ninth amongst the best teams in the country as the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its 2025-26 NCAA Division III Men’s Preseason Coaches Poll and individual rankings Monday afternoon.
VTSU Castleton earned itself a top-10 spot following a strong showing throughout the 2024-25 season, which featured multiple wrestlers competing at the 2025 NCAA Division III National Championships. The Spartans collected 24.5 points as a team thanks to five wrestlers ranked in the top-15 of their respective weight classes nationally.
Gavin Bradley headlines at 125 pounds after his appearance at the NCAA Division III National Championships last season. He debuts at No. 3 in the 125-pound rankings. Connor Gregory debuts at No. 6 in the 174-pound rankings after his first Nationals appearance last season. Nathaniel Camiscioli and Evan Day both debut No. 7 at 157 and 285 pounds, respectively, after both wrestlers appeared at the National Championships a season ago. Drew Marchese rounds out the nationally-ranked wrestlers, debuting at No. 14 in the 133-pound rankings.
The Spartans also fared well in the Region 1 rankings, with Bradley (125) being tabbed first, Camiscioli (157) and Gregory (174) being tabbed second. Marchese (133) and Day (285) garnered third-place rankings, while Josh Negron (197) and junior transfer Gabriel Goss (149) earned fourth-place rankings. Jashon Holmes (165) was tabbed fifth, while Desmond McLaughlin (184) earned a sixth-place ranking.
