Following a relatively slow start to her collegiate career and a scoreless outing in her previous game, Brynn McGaughy finally looked comfortable in her new setting.
The five-star freshman forward scored a career-high 20 points to help lead the No. 25 Washington women’s basketball team to a 71-39 nonconference win against Vermont in front of 1,667 at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Before Sunday’s game, McGaughy averaged 5.5 points and was coming off a sobering 0-for-2 shooting display four days earlier.
Against the Catamounts, the 6-foot-3 post player converted 9 of 15 field goals while dancing around defenders in the paint for an array of spinning hook shots and midway jumpers. She played 23 minutes and sat out most of the fourth quarter.
Junior guard Sayvia Sellers continued her red-hot scoring spree and paced Washington with a game-high 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting while senior guard Hannah Stines tallied her second career double-double (11 points and 10 rebounds).
Washington led 29-20 at halftime and broke the game open in the third quarter while outscoring Vermont 20-9. During the period, Sellers had 13 points.
Keira Hanson 12 points for Vermont, which fell to 4-2.
Washington (5-0) hosts Southern on Tuesday.
