Alabama football heads to Atlanta for the fifth all-time meeting between the Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship game on Saturday.

Alabama (10-2 overall, 7-1 SEC) is ranked No. 10 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and No. 9 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, unveiled on Tuesday. Coach Kalen DeBoer’s team can clinch an automatic berth in the 12-team CFP with a win. Alabama is seeking its 31st SEC championship in school history.

The Crimson Tide made it to Atlanta thanks in large part to a gutsy fourth-down decision by DeBoer in the annual Iron Bowl showdown against Auburn last week. With the score tied at 20 and facing a fourth-and-2 from the Tigers’ 6-yard line, Alabama declined a possible go-ahead field goal.

Instead, Ty Simpson hit Isaiah Horton for his third touchdown pass of the night — all three went to Horton — and a 27-20 lead with 3:50 to play. Bray Hubbard forced a Cam Coleman fumble at the Alabama 20-yard line with less than a minute left, and the Tide escaped with their sixth straight win over Auburn to clinch their 16th appearance in the SEC title game.

Georgia (11-1, 7-1) is No. 3 in the polls and CFP rankings. The Bulldogs are coming off a 16-7 win over Georgia Tech last week in Atlanta and are playing some of their best football of the year. Georgia’s only loss this season was to Alabama, 24-21, in Week 5 at Sanford Stadium.

In the four previous head-to-head matchups between Alabama and Georgia for the SEC championship, only one has been decided by more than a touchdown.

Is another classic in store for Saturday?

Who has the edge? USA TODAY Sports’ prediction for Alabama vs Georgia

On Thursday, USA TODAY Sports’ team of college football experts unveiled its weekly picks and predictions for every game on conference championship weekend, including Alabama-Georgia.

“Our staff panel of pigskin prognosticators is back to weigh in one final time as college football wraps up its regular season with nine conference championship games. The stakes range from College Football Playoff survival to mere seeding among the top-tier leagues, and mainly bragging rights in a couple of cases.” –Eddie Timanus, USA TODAY Sports.

Will Alabama win to clinch an automatic berth as the SEC champion in the College Football Playoff?

The six-man panel of Timanus, Paul Myerberg, Matt Hayes, Blake Toppmeyer, Erick Smith and Jordan Mendoza don’t see it happening. All six USA TODAY Sports panelists believe the Bulldogs will defeat the Crimson Tide.

What is Alabama football’s history vs Georgia?

Alabama leads the all-time series against Georgia, 45-26-4. The Crimson Tide have won three straight games against the Bulldogs and are 10-1 against Georgia in the series’ last 11 meetings dating to 2008. Alabama’s only loss in that span was in the national championship game in January 2022.

The Tide defeated the Bulldogs, 24-21, in the last matchup on Sept. 27 at Sanford Stadium in Athens. Ty Simpson threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns, and Isaiah Horton had five catches for 65 yards and a score.

In the last SEC championship showdown between Alabama and Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Crimson Tide ended a 29-game Bulldogs winning streak with a 27-24 upset victory on Dec. 2, 2023. The win sent Nick Saban’s team to the College Football Playoff in his final season as coach.

The Crimson Tide are 4-0 all time in the SEC title game against Georgia and are 11-4 in the conference championship game since its launch in 1992, when Alabama defeated the Florida Gators, 28-21, at Legion Field in Birmingham.
