The 39th annual Vermont State Scholastic Chess Championships will take place March 28 at Lamoille Union High School, according to a community announcement.
The announcement, which came from tournament organizers Tuesday, explained how the event would be the proving ground for Vermont’s nominees to compete at several national invitationals. Those would include the Denker, Haring, Barber, Ashley and Rockefeller tournaments, according to the announcement.
The March event is open to Vermont students grades K-12. Participants must be Vermont residents or enrolled in a Vermont public or private school. Home-schooled students who are Vermont residents are also eligible, according to the announcement.
Amanda Kulas, left, and Sam Wegiel of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, play chess Nov. 30, 2019 at Snow Republic Brewing Co. in West Dover.
Chessboards, pieces and clocks will be provided, and no prior tournament experience is necessary. High school, eighth-grade and fifth-grade sections will feature official, US Chess Federation-rated matches, while the remaining sections will be unrated. Individual and team prizes will be awarded.
All players must register online ahead of the event. No walk-in registrations will be accepted. Registration closes March 23 but may close earlier if space limitations are reached. Registration must be completed online; no entries will be accepted via mail or email.
Complete rules and registration information can be found at vermontchess.org.
