FOXBOROUGH, Mass — The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs on Wednesday despite the veteran wide receiver’s impact and leadership last season. However, it seems there is a world in which the four-time Pro Bowler could find his way back to Foxborough.

While the Patriots signed receiver Romeo Doubs, the team is still open to adding at the position. There have been rumors that New England is interested in trading for A.J. Brown, but they could also add a free agent. And Diggs happens to be in that group.

When speaking with reporters on Thursday, Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf didn’t rule out the positibility.

“I wouldn’t say the door’s closed,” Wolf said. “I mean, again, we’re gonna look through every way we possibly can to help improve the team.”

Diggs finished the season with 85 catches, 1,013 yards, and four touchdowns last season, becoming the first Patriots receiver to surpass 1,000 yards since Julian Edelman in 2019. However, the way his contract was set up meant that New England was going to take a massive cap hit to keep him. So, that was part of the reason they decided to part ways.

“Just a variety of factors,” Wolf said. “Looking at financials, ability, a lot of things go into this, and we have nothing but respect for Stefon. He was an absolute warrior for us, as I said to him multiple times after games, and just really appreciate all his contributions to the team.”

Wolf also alluded to the fact that restructuring Diggs’ contract was a possibility. But it ultimately didn’t work out.

“We talked about a variety of options,” Wolf said. “And ultimately just went in this direction and decided, excited to move forward with the guys that we signed today.”

However, there is still a chance Diggs is in a Patriots jersey when the 2026 season begins.
