It’s time for a game of “Let’s argue about which U.S. sports star was better – winter edition.”

OK, it’s not a game. It’s a poll. And we want your input on the best American-born athletes who’ve ever plied their trade on the ice or snow. From hockey rinks to bobsled tracks and mountain ski slopes, U.S. athletes have stood their own against the best athletes that cold-weather countries have to offer.

Want proof? Remember the Milan-Cortina Olympics? The U.S. was second in the medal count to Norway, a country founded in 872 AD. That’s right – we had to put AD there because Norway is so old that its founding doesn’t even look like a modern date.

Scandinavians have been on skis and skates for millennia, but Americans from Eric Heiden and Shaun White to Lindsey Vonn and Hilary Knight have made their mark on the Winter Olympics stage.

Visit USA TODAY next week to see what our experts have to say about the top U.S. winter sport stars of all time. Until then, weigh in on your GOAT picks below, add your sleeper suggestion for the list, or shout about the most obvious omission you see.

With this celebration of America’s top sports figures, we’re featuring these athletes and the high schools they graduated from – or hometowns for those who took an alternate path to sports stardom.
