Selection Sunday was a relief for Jeff Walz. Not having a game prevented his Louisville women’s basketball team from suffering its eighth loss of the season.

“We had lost the past three Sundays, so it was nice to know that we actually won today,” he said.

UofL’s win on Sunday was getting a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 and fifth time in program history. The Cardinals will host 14th-seeded Vermont in the first round of March Madness at noon today at the KFC Yum! Center. Louisville will look to turn a metaphoric Sunday win into one that happens on the court with almost two weeks of rest and preparation under its belt.

The Cardinals enter the Big Dance with the nation’s 17th-best scoring average (79.9 points per game) while still waiting to see if they’ve learned from their ACC Tournament championship loss to Duke. Louisville was ahead by four points going into the final minute of regulation before the Blue Devils forced overtime and won the extra frame, 10-5. Despite the loss, Imari Berry and Mackenly Randolph earned all-tournament first-team honors while Laura Ziegler made the all-tournament second team.

“When we play our best, we can beat everyone,” said Ziegler, who’s making her first NCAA Tournament appearance today. “And knowing that we’ve been in really close games too, before, so hopefully the nerves and everything being in that moment (can help) just being a little bit more used to it, too. So I feel really confident in this team. We know we’ve talked about it the whole year, but we’ve got so many different people who can step up and who can perform in that moment too. So it’s going to be really fun.”

The winner of the first-round contest moves on to play either sixth-seeded Alabama or Rhode Island, the 11th seed, in the second round Monday.

The Cards are still dancing. UofL will play the winner of Alabama-Rhode Island Monday at the KFC Yum! Center after defeating Vermont in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Mackenly Randolph led the Cards with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the last five games. Laura Ziegler (12), Taj Roberts (12) and Imari Berry (10) also achieved double-digit scoring. Reyna Scott was close behind with eight points.

UofL is outscoring Vermont 10-3 in the period. Mackenly Randolph is up to 20 points, which is a career high. This is her fourth double-double in the last five games. Other double-digit scorers for the Cards are Laura Ziegler (10) and Taj Roberts (12).

Mackenly Randolph has a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, both tying career highs as the final quarter awaits. She played a key role in the run UofL went on to end the third period, during which the Cards made seven of their last eight shots.

UofL has held Vermont to zero points in three minutes and nine seconds of game time.

Despite not being able to fully control the momentum of the game, the Cardinals managed to lead after two quarters. Mackenly Randolph leads the team with eight points.

After briefly losing the lead, back-to-back 3-pointers from Taj Roberts and Mackenly Randolph put the Cardinals back in front.

The Catamounts used a 7-0 run to take the lead late in the quarter. Keira Hanson provided Vermont with nine points on 4-for-6 shooting.

Both teams are shooting 38% from the field to start the game.
