LA and Bay Area gear up for FIFA World Cup games

California, including Los Angeles and the Bay Area, is preparing stadiums, transit, and security for upcoming FIFA World Cup matches and tourism surge.

North America is the host continent for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, at which the most talented soccer players in the world will compete throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico in stage play gearing for the championship.

There are 11 U.S. host cities: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle.

The matches hosted in the Bay Area will be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. However, for the international tournament, it’ll be referred to as “San Francisco Bay Area Stadium” because Levi’s is not an official FIFA sponsor.

From June 13 through to July 1, Northern California will be packed with soccer fans from all over the world as international teams arrive to represent their respective countries.

“The FIFA World Cup is, as you know, much more than just a sports event. It is, and it has become, a social phenomenon, a unique social phenomenon, that brings people together from all over the world,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

Levi’s Stadium, a 71,000-max capacity venue, will host five group-stage games featuring Qatar, Switzerland, Austria, Jordan, Paraguay, Algeria and Australia. The stadium will also host a Round of 32 fixture, with the knockout game being played on Wednesday, July 1.
