The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots both rested their starting quarterbacks in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL preseason. Will fans get a chance to see Jalen Hurts and Drake Maye when the two teams square off at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 22?
Presumably, the Eagles and Patriots will want to get their starters action at some point ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Each squad hopes to re-emerge as a Super Bowl contender, so giving their top players chances to shake off the rust could prove valuable.
Nonetheless, the Eagles and Patriots will also want to give their young players extended looks as the preseason goes on. For Philadelphia, that includes seeing what Tanner McKee and Cole Payton can do at quarterback, as well as rookie pass-catchers Makai Lemon and Eli Stowers.
Meanwhile, the Patriots will want to test both Tommy DeVito and rookie Behren Morton as their top options behind Maye. They let Joshua Dobbs go during the offseason, so seeing DeVito emerge as a quality No. 2 quarterback could instill confidence in New England’s depth at the position.
The Patriots will also probably want to get a look at A.J. Brown – who the team acquired in an offseason trade with the Eagles – at some point in the preseason. What better chance to do that than against his former team?
