The 1 trade Patriots must make in final week before 2026 NFL trade deadline

The Patriots need another reliable target for Drake Maye. A reunion with Josh Downs could be the answer before the trade deadline.

The Patriots have built a season around toughness and the belief that they can hang with the AFC’s best. That said, belief only carries an offense so far when its receiving options keep disappearing. With the trade deadline approaching, New England has a chance to address its most pressing weakness. The move should be clear: bring Josh Downs from Indianapolis to Foxborough and reunite the Colts wideout with Drake Maye. It is a practical deal with the potential to make a meaningful difference in the playoff race.

Familiar problems

New England’s 2026 campaign opened with an agonizing loss to the Seattle Seahawks. They then steadied themselves with a victory over Pittsburgh before responding to a difficult defeat in Jacksonville. Drake Maye’s late-game brilliance and a punishing ground attack helped fuel a road upset of Buffalo, followed by convincing wins over Las Vegas and the New York Jets. A narrow loss to Chicago interrupted that momentum. However, a divisional triumph over Miami in Week 8 restored New England’s rhythm. They enter Week 9 at 5-3.

The schedule has tested the roster, though. Hunter Henry and defensive anchor Christian Barmore have dealt with ailments. The receiving corps has taken the hardest hit. AJ Brown’s lower-body issues have limited his availability and effectiveness. Romeo Doubs is on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Maye has still found ways to move the offense. Still, the margin for error is shrinking.

The right target

The most sensible solution is a trade for Colts wide receiver Josh Downs. Indianapolis has entered a roster reset. They have already moved established players Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner. Downs, meanwhile, has reportedly requested a trade. He is also in the final year of his contract. He is a proven slot receiver whose skill set addresses a specific need in New England’s offense.

Downs gives Maye reliable separation in the short and intermediate areas. His ability to uncover against zone coverage makes him a natural answer on third down. He can work option routes and turn a routine completion into a useful gain after the catch. Against man coverage, his release and route detail can create daylight for Maye to deliver on time.

The numbers underline both his experience and his current situation. Downs had 26 catches for 307 yards through seven games. He currently leads Indianapolis in receptions and receiving yards. However, he has not scored a touchdown yet. His production has come amid a Colts transition that has also seen Alec Pierce sidelined. A conditional mid-round pick in the 2027 draft would be a reasonable starting point for New England. The Patriots should not overpay for a rental, but they should be willing to move decisively if Indianapolis is prepared to deal.

Accelerating the offense

The strongest argument for this move is the existing connection between Downs and Maye. The two shared the field at North Carolina in 2022. That was when Downs delivered 94 receptions for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns. That season offered a glimpse of how effectively he could operate with Maye. Their familiarity will not eliminate every adjustment to a new playbook. However, it should make the transition pretty smooth.

Of course, Downs would still need to master Josh McDaniels’ concepts. He also needs to build chemistry in live action. The foundational understanding, though, is already there. Maye knows how Downs attacks leverage and finds space. Downs has experience reading Maye’s movement and adjusting when a play breaks down. That shared history could help them get on the same page quickly.

Downs would not need to replace Brown or become the Patriots’ primary receiver. His value would be in making the entire passing game more functional. He could take pressure off Henry over the middle. That would give Maye a dependable outlet when the pocket compresses. It could also help keep the chains moving while New England waits for its receiving group to get healthier.

Chance to get ahead

New England has earned its place in the AFC conversation. Still, the next step requires more than grit. The Patriots cannot assume their current receiving rotation will hold up through the stretch run. That’s particularly true with important games looming and a Munich trip on the schedule. Downs is attainable, productive, and familiar to the quarterback who needs him most. If the Colts are willing to turn a contract-year receiver into future draft capital, the Patriots should make the call. This is the kind of targeted move that can strengthen a contender without sacrificing its long-term plan. Bringing Downs to Foxborough would give Maye a trusted weapon and make New England a tougher matchup when the games matter most.

The Patriots have built a season around toughness and the belief that they can hang with the AFC’s best. That said, belief only carries an offense so far when its receiving options keep disappearing. With the trade deadline approaching, New England has a chance to address its most pressing weakness.
