Orlins, Lombardi Shine for Big Green in ITA New England Regionals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – This past weekend, Dartmouth women’s tennis competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s New England Regionals hosted at Harvard, playing both doubles and singles matches.
 
First-years Josephine Lombardi and Alexandra Orlins shined for the Big Green, both posting over .500 records through the tournament.
 
On day one of competition, Dartmouth played in two rounds of singles matches. Lauren Han, Josephine Lombardi, Valentina Cruz and Elise Wong all kicked off competition with wins. Han defeated Maeve Cassidy of Fairfield, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, Lombardi defeated Caitlin Flower of Quinnipiac 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, Cruz defeated Anagha Shankar of Quinnipiac 6-4, 7-5 and Wong defeated Ella Fernando of LeMoyne 6-4, 7-6(5).
 
Brooke Hess fell in her first match 6-2, 6-0 to Isaballa Camacho of Boston College while Audrey Feng lost to Anne Moody of Brown, 6-4, 6-4. Both Hess and Feng won their consolation matches later in the day. Hess was dominant against Jordan Phillips of Merrimack, winning her match 6-1, 6-0 while Feng defeated Rebecca Hess of Colgate in a thrilling match that went to a tiebreak, 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-4.
 
In the second round of qualifying on day one, Lombardi earned her second win of the day defeating Grace Darcy of URI 6-0, 6-2, qualifying for the main draw.
 
Han, Wong, and Cruz fell in their second matches of the day. Han fell to Dylan Gelber of Cornell, 6-2, 6-1, Wong lost to Isabella Baker of Quinnipiac, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, and Cruz was defeated by Nadia Barteck of Boston College, 3-6, 6-1. 6-2 to close out day one of competition.
 
On Thursday, the Big Green competed in the first round of doubles competition and the first round main draw of singles.
Lombardi continued to play well, winning her doubles match alongside Alexanrda Orlins. The pair defeated UConn, 8-5 for the Big Green’s only doubles win on the day.
 
Hess and Wong fell to UConn, 8-4, Cruz and Sam Grosjean fell to Boston College, 8-7(3), and Han and Feng lost to New Haven, 8-3.
 
In singles first round main draw, Orlins made her first appearance of the tournament, defeating Andre Martinez of Cornell, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0.
 
Lombardi suffered her first loss of the tournament, falling to Claire Sho of Harvard, 6-3, 6-2. Grosjean, also playing in her first singles match of the tournament, fell to Anne Yang of Brown, 6-2, 7-5.
 
After day two of competition, both Lombardi and Orlins had qualified for draws, Orlins in both singles and doubles alongside Lombardi.
 
In second round doubles, the pair fell to Syracuse, 8-6, but Orlins was strong in her two singles matches. The first-year won her second round singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Charlotte Owensby of Harvard before defeating Seren Agar of Boston College in the third round, 6-3, 7-6(4).
 
The singles quarterfinals took place on Sunday, as Orlins fell 6-2, 6-4, wrapping the tournament with a 4-2 overall record.  

The Big Green will return to action next weekend, traveling back to Harvard for the Ivy Invite. The tournament will take place from Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26.
