A group of snow sports enthusiasts has banded together to create a bursary programme aimed at helping people with a desire to experience skiing or snowboarding but who may not have the financial means.

The Bermuda Snow Club said the move was among several “big ambitions” it is pursuing to make it affordable for more people to try out snow sports.

The group marked its second anniversary last month by celebrating “growth, adventure and community”.

It said: “What began as a small idea in September 2023 has quickly snowballed into a thriving community of nearly 100 members.”

The club was founded to bring together Bermuda’s skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts as well as those curious to try the sport for the first time.

It aims to create a friendly, inclusive and accessible community in an “unlikely location for winter sports”, the group said.

The memory of founder Grace Munro’s late brother, Harrison Owens, inspired the club’s creation.

In January, the club held its first official overseas trip, to Toronto, Canada, joining the popular MLK Ski Weekend.

As part of its mission to break down barriers to entry, the club launched its “Re-Ski” initiative this year, a spokeswoman said.

The programme recycles, loans and gifts ski gear to new skiers, making it easier and more affordable for people to get started.

Community impact has been central to the growth of the club, the spokeswoman said.

Last year, the group banded together to raise more than $1,500 for the Friends of Hospice charity supporting Agape House and hospice care in Bermuda.

Given its mandate of support, the club has made a formal application to be recognised as a charity.

Over the past year, the group hosted a series of Bermudian-based events, including virtual skiing, a ski film screening at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, and waterskiing sessions in collaboration with the Island Boat Club.

The club also plans to mark the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics with community celebrations and events.
