Utilizing the closing speed he showed while winning two events at the Maine Class A state championship meet, Henri Rivard of Marshwood won the 1-mile at the New England Interscholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.

Rivard stayed near the lead for the first six laps then closed hard over the final 400 meters to post a winning time of 4 minutes, 22.39 seconds. Rivard was the 800 and mile champ at the Class A state meet.

Rivard was Maine’s only New England champion. Several athletes were all-New England by placing in the top six.

Also in the boys’ mile, Ellis Wood of Deering was fifth in 4:25.16 and Atticus Merriam of Scarborough was sixth in 4:25.21. Lewiston’s Enzo Giampolo (4:25.47) was just off the podium in seventh.

Bangor’s Jake Bassi was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 5 inches.

In the girls mile, Scarborough’s Laurel Driscoll placed third in 5:06.99 with York’s Zoe Carroll (5:07.28) taking fifth.

Isabella Harmon of Scarborough was third in the high jump with a best of 5-7. Marshwood’s Anna Jennings took fourth in the long jump (18-7 3/4) and Sloan Gardner of Cape Elizabeth was fifth in the shot put (40-0 1/2).

Georgia Moon of Falmouth and Addison Elliott of Hampden Academy just missed all-New England honors, placing seventh and eighth — top two in their section — in the girls 1,000 meters. Elyannah Briggs of Old Town made the finals of the high jump and was seventh at 5-5.
