The New England Patriots have not forgotten their Super Bowl loss earlier this year. New England made aggressive improvement during NFL free agency, but they still need to add talent during the draft. One Patriots figure explained the team’s current stance as it relates to one of the team’s young stars.

Patriots executive Eliot Wolf took a strong stance on the team’s contract dispute with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

“No Gonzalez update other than I’ll continue to say we want Christian here,” Wolf said on Monday, per Patriots reporter Mark Daniels.

Gonzalez is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract in 2026. The Patriots have already said that they plan to pick up the fifth-year option on Gonzalez. That will keep him under contract through the 2027 season with a $18.12 million cap hit.

The young cornerback explained after the Super Bowl that he would let his agents handle this contract situation. However, Gonzalez made it clear that he intends to stay in New England.

“This is where I got drafted. I don’t want to be anywhere else,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez is more than deserving of a lucrative contract extension. The 23-year-old cornerback started his career a little slow after a 2023 shoulder injury ruined his rookie season. But Gonzalez rebounded, putting together two excellent campaigns in 2024 and 2025.

Gonzalez helped elevate New England’s defense in 2025, logging 69 total tackles and 10 passes defensed during the regular season.

The good news for Gonzalez is that his big payday is coming eventually. But both sides do not seem to feel pressured to get a deal done right away. That means this situation could drag on into next offseason.

Either way, there’s no sign that Gonzalez is going anywhere.
