If you don’t have a dog in the hunt, don’t have any skin in the game, have no horse in the race, then your rooting affiliations are very much available for rent in the next week. A Seattle-New England Super Bowl pairs two sporting cities that, for the most part, couldn’t have more diametrically opposite relationships with the folks around here:

1. New England. And let’s be honest, most people in New York would sooner root for a tax audit than a seventh Patriots Super Bowl win.

2. Seattle. And let’s be honest, if you’ve ever given even a second thought to most sporting things Seattle, it’s probably because you still can’t believe Buck Showalter didn’t go with Mariano Rivera at the end of Game 5 of the ’95 ALCS. Although four championships in the next five years probably helped ease that malaise.

There are other ways that you can spice up the Big Game next week, and those avenues are all perfectly legal in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Maybe you favor the more traditional Super Bowl Squares lottery, although while I enjoy that as much as the next guy, it’s a little less fun rooting for a team to score two safeties so you can hit a number, as opposed to the team itself.
