HINESBURG, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – For the first time in nearly four decades, there is a new team at the top of Vermont high school wrestling.

The Vermont State Wrestling Championship began Friday, February 27 and concluded Saturday at Champlain Valley Union High School, wrapping up a competitive two-day meet filled with individual milestones and a historic team finish.

Several wrestlers delivered standout performances along the way.

Colchester’s Cahota LaFond captured his fourth straight state title at 126 pounds. LaFond added another achievement to an already impressive résumé after surpassing 200 career wins last month.

Snow returns Tuesday after a cold, sunny Monday

Mount Anthony’s Ryan Marsden, at 285 pounds, secured his third straight state championship. Marsden sealed this win in the third period, completing a dominant run in his weight class.

In the team standings, Middlebury finished third with 134.5 points. Vergennes placed fourth with 123, and Otter Valley rounded out the top five with 121 points.

But the biggest story of the weekend came in the final team results.

Spaulding claimed the Division I state title with 236.5 points, defeating Mount Anthony, which finished with 195. The Crimson Tide placed wrestlers in 12 of the 14 weight classes and sent seven athletes to the finals, showcasing depth across the lineup.

The victory ends Mount Anthony’s 36-year championship streak, which dated back to 1989. The Patriots’ run was recognized as a national record in wrestling and ranks sixth all-time for consecutive state titles among all high school sports in the country.

It marks Spaulding’s first state championship since 1984.
