The New England Patriots reportedly beat out the Washington Commanders to sign veteran wide receiver Romeo Doubs in free agency last week, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

It was a much-needed signing for the Patriots after the team released leading receiver Stefon Diggs, who was only one year into a three-year deal. Per Schultz, Doubs had “tangible interest” from the Commanders, as well as the Patriots, on the open market.

However, he ultimately sided with New England in the end.

“Romeo Doubs entertained tangible interest from the #Commanders and it was very close in the end, but he chooses NE,” Schultz posted on X.

Doubs comes to the Patriots after a productive 2025 season.

He had 55 catches for a career-high 724 yards and six touchdowns in a year where he caught passes from both Jordan Love and backup quarterback Malik Willis. The veteran wideout is a savvy route-runner with the ability to attack in the slot and the intermediate areas on the football field.

He’s a potential chain-mover for the Patriots with room to grow at only 25 years old. The fact that he ultimately chose to come to New England is proof of how far the team has come with Drake Maye at quarterback and Mike Vrabel as the head coach.
