The New England Patriots were within striking distance of establishing their wide receiver room with Deebo Samuel in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Patriots selected wide receiver N’Keal Harry with the No. 32 overall pick in the first round of the draft. Harry recorded 57 receptions for 598 yards and four touchdowns in 33 games played for New England from 2019-21. The Arizona State product was used in the Patriots’ offense, but never amassed more than 309 yards in a season in New England. The same goes for his career.

By selecting Harry when they did, the Patriots passed on a wide receiver who turned into a First-Team All-Pro honoree in the NFL, as well as a future Super Bowl champion cornerback.

New selection: WR Deebo Samuel (UFA)

No. 36 overall pick in 2019 – San Francisco 49ers

Samuel was available for the Patriots to select with the No. 32 overall pick in 2019. The South Carolina product was named First-Team All-Pro in 2021. Samuel recorded 77 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns that season. He also led the NFL in yards per reception in 2021 with 18.2 yards. Samuel has been used as a versatile threat as both a receiver and rusher throughout his career.

Honorable mention: CB Sean Murphy-Bunting (Arizona Cardinals)

No. 39 overall pick in 2019 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Murphy-Bunting was another player that the Patriots had the chance to select with the No. 32 overall pick. The Central Michigan product has recorded multiple interceptions in four of the six seasons that he’s played in the NFL. Murphy-Bunting won the Super Bowl in 2021 as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
