The New England Patriots are standing firmly behind Mike Vrabel for now, but the conversation around his future is only getting louder.

What started as an off-field controversy has slowly evolved into a situation that is being watched closely across the league. Between personal matters and public scrutiny, questions about stability have naturally followed.

And while the organization has made its stance clear in the short term, contingency planning is already part of the equation. Because in the NFL, even the most stable situations can shift quickly if things spiral.

According to the Daily Mail, the Patriots are not looking to make an immediate change.

“The Krafts are extremely loyal and have no intention of firing Mike, nor do they want to see him quit over all this drama,” the Daily Mail reported.

The message from ownership is clear. Despite everything surrounding Vrabel, there is no desire to force a decision or move on prematurely.

That aligns with how the franchise has historically operated, prioritizing stability even during turbulent moments.

Mike Tomlin emerges as a contingency option if the situation escalates

However, there is also a longer-term scenario being considered.

“But if these upcoming few months go haywire, and if they are put in a situation of no return, either with the team not doing well or the drama of Mike’s family issues taking over and forcing a decision on Mike’s coaching future, the one person that they would seek to replace him would be Mike Tomlin,” the report added.

Tomlin’s name carries weight for a reason. After stepping down from the Pittsburgh Steelers in early 2026 following a 19-year run without a single losing season, he transitioned into a broadcast role with NBC’s Football Night in America.

That move signaled a temporary step away from coaching, but not necessarily a permanent one. Reports indicate that multiple teams showed interest in him immediately after his departure, even as he committed to his media role.

For the Patriots, the appeal is obvious. Tomlin’s consistency, leadership, and experience in high-pressure environments make him one of the few names who could seamlessly step into a situation like this.

At the same time, there are complications. The Steelers still hold his coaching rights through 2027, meaning any move would likely require compensation, and there is no guarantee he is ready to return to the sidelines so soon.
