MONTPELIER — Members of three BFA-St. Albans championship groups — the Comets hockey team, Bobwhites basketball team and independent alpine skier Grant Montgomery — were recognized Thursday, May 14 at the Vermont Statehouse for their Division 1 State Championship seasons this winter.

Each group was presented with resolutions from the Vermont General Assembly honoring their accomplishments and their success in representing their school and community. While at the statehouse, the athletes also had the opportunity to meet Gov. Phil Scott, Lt. Gov. John Rogers, and Franklin County senators and representatives.

For the Comets hockey team, the recognition capped off a championship season built on teamwork, commitment and strong community support from the stands and beyond. The Bobwhites basketball team was also honored for a standout season that brought energy, pride and a championship title to BFA and its supporters.

Independent alpine skier Grant Montgomery was recognized for an exceptional season on the slopes, highlighted by a sweep of the Vermont State Alpine Championships, where he won both the giant slalom and slalom titles. With no varsity alpine program at BFA, Montgomery trained independently with Rice Memorial High School at Cochran’s Ski Area. He competed with support from the Smugglers’ Notch Ski and Snowboard Club.

His success earned him recognition through a legislative resolution and a spot on Vermont’s Eastern High School Championship alpine team.

The day in Montpelier was also an opportunity to recognize the people behind the scenes, coaches who traveled with the teams and supported them throughout the day, along with families, teammates and community members who have been behind these athletes all season long, whether on the ice, the court, the slopes, or in the stands.

For all involved, it was a proud moment celebrating not just championships but the effort, dedication and community that made them possible.
