FARGO — North Dakota State will undergo a rare change in the upper tier of its athletic administration. Deputy director Todd Phelps is resigning to become the director of athletics at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.

He’ll return to a Division III program where he got his start in 1995 as assistant men’s basketball coach and coordinator of facilities and operations before moving on to roles in facilities and operations at Yale, Brown, Stony Brook (N.Y.) and Oregon State. He’s been at NDSU since 2015.

Phelps was involved in the design and construction of some major projects in the history of the program like the Nodak Insurance Football Performance Complex, softball’s Tharaldson Park, the Terrence Dahl and Donna Beres Track Complex and the finishing touches on the Sanford Health Athletic Complex. He also helped negotiate uniform and apparel deals with Nike in 2018 and Under Armour in 2024.

“The relationships built here and the experiences we have shared — from championships and historic moments to the everyday work behind the scenes — will always mean a great deal to my wife Nancy and me,” Phelps said in a statement.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
