US Open mixed doubles championship score, highlights

The US Open mixed doubles championship was decided Wednesday night in New York.

After a day filled with upsets that included top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic eliminated and Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz bounced before the semifinals, Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik defeated Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli for the title and $1 million top prize.

The Czech duo won the first set 6-3, dropped the second set 1-6 and took the victory in the third and final set tiebreaker 10-6 off an ace from Mensik.

This is the first major win for both Muchova and Mensik.

“At the end, really the matching outfits made the difference for us,” Muchova laughed in the post-match interview on the ESPN broadcast.

They both wore satin burgundy Adidas track jackets to coordinate with the shorts they wore while playing.

“I wasn’t really expecting to be standing here tonight. We came out just having fun and enjoy this mixed doubles. And now we are standing here almost with a trophy soon, so I think we did something right,” Muchova said.

A month ago, Muchova finished as runner-up at Wimbledon to fellow Czech player Linda Noskova.

Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils and Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev were the other teams who advanced through Tuesday’s action to reach the semifinals.

Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the third set and the match 10-6.

After some intense back-and-forths, the Czech duo won on the third championship point off an ace from Mensik. He pumped his fist and leaped in the air after his serve sailed through the other side.

This is the first major title for each of them.

Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli made it look pretty easy, winning the second set 6-1. There were a few battles back and forth with Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik, but overall the Swiss and Italian duo were dominant.

With the score tied at one set a piece, we are headed to the third and final set. The winner takes the match and the $1 million prize.

Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik broke serve in the fourth game and cruised to a 6-3 win in the first set. Mensik finished the set off with an ace. They are one set away from the $1 million winner’s check.

The championship match, with $1 million on the line, is underway with Karolina Muchova and Jakun Mensik having walked off the court after their dramatic semifinal win about 30 minutes beforehand. Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli have been waiting for about an hour to see who they would play.

After facing match point, Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik rallied back to win four straight points and win the 10-point tiebreaker 11-9.

They advance to the final.

Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev blazed out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker and then gave away three straight points. They rallied for the next three points with Andreeva hitting a forehand winner from the net to take a 6-3 lead.

With a monster smash overhead and then a blistering forehand that forced an error, Mirra Andreeva carried her partner Andrey Rublev to the second set won 5-3. They won four of the last five games to force the tiebreaker.

Karolina Muchova made a dramatic angled volley to cap a 8-6 tiebreaker win as she and partner Jakub Mensik took the first set over Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev 5-4.

After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli tore off 12 straight points to close out the second set 4-1 and then took the 10-point tiebreaker 10-5.

Bencic and Cobolli, who won Indian Wells in the spring, are now undefeated in seven matches since teaming up in December.

After losing a nail-biting tiebreaker in the first set, Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli broke serve early in the second and cruised to a win. They took the second set 4-1.

The match will go to a decisive 10-point tiebreaker.

Flavio Cobolli double faulted on set point after he and Belinda Bencic battled all the way back from 4-0 to give the first set to the husband-and-wife team of Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina 5-4 (7).

Billie Jean King was part of the coin toss before Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina square off against Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in the first mixed doubles semifinal, and received thunderous applause when her name was called. Perfect conditions for tennis here at Arthur Ashe Stadium, as a late-arriving crowd settles into their seats.

Gael Monfils is playing his 18th and final US Open, and he is two wins from leaving with a Grand Slam trophy he shares with his wife.

Monfils and Elina Svitolina have been married since 2021 and have a 3-year-old daughter Skai.

Asked about playing doubles with his wife, Monfils said it was “the first time and the last time.

US Open mixed doubles format explained

Each match will be best of three sets, and to win a set, a team needs to win four games. Ties at four games apiece will result in a tiebreaker. Also different is when there is a deuce score in a game. There won’t be an advantage score, so the next point after deuce wins the game; second-set ties result in a 10-point tiebreak.

The final will be a best-of-three-set match with sets to six games (tie-break at six-all), with no-advantage scoring and a 10-point tie-break in lieu of a third set.

Who won US Open mixed doubles title in 2025?

Italy’s Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori won the US Open mixed doubles title for the second year in a row, holding off Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the finals 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 Wednesday, Aug. 20 at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 6-foot-4 Vavassori was spectacular at the net and overpowering with his serve. And his 38-year-old partner, Errani, also was masterful during their two-day run through the 16-team field.

The Italians collected $1 million by winning the championship.

How much do US Open mixed doubles champions win ?

The winning team splits $1 million. The runners-up get $500,000 to divvy up. The losing semifinalists get $250,000 for a parting gift. Quarterfinalists got $120,000 – not bad for one day’s work.

The record Bencic and Svitolina already set this year

Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina made history in February, becoming the first two mothers ranked inside the WTA top 10 at the same time. Bencic was No. 9. Svitolina was No.10.

Tonight they are on opposite sides of the net.

Bencic had daughter Bella in April 2024 and began last season ranked No.489. She finished it at No.11 with titles in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo and a Wimbledon semifinal.

Svitolina had daughter Skai in October 2022 and won Rome in May, her first WTA 1000 title since 2018.
