A bid for breaking to return to the Olympics in 2032 was submitted by the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF).
“Our proposal for Brisbane 2032 is about securing a long-term future for our athletes,” WDSF President Shawn Tay said in a press release. “We proved in Paris that breaking belongs on the world’s biggest stage. Our focus now is opening doors for the next generation and keeping that Olympic pathway open.”
Breaking made its Olympic debut in Paris in 2024 under a rule that allows Olympic hosts to propose the addition of one or multiple sports strictly for their edition of the Games.
Breaking will not be on the Los Angeles 2028 program.
An IOC group has been tasked with assessing the Olympic program of sports and disciplines before the final program for the 2032 Brisbane Games is announced.
For Los Angeles 2028, there will be an Olympic record number of sports (36) and medal events (353).
The 36 sports include five that were added strictly for the LA Games at organizers’ request — baseball/softball, cricket (T20 version), flag football, lacrosse (sixes version) and squash, though it’s possible some or all of those sports could be brought back for Brisbane.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry said in June, in discussing the Olympic program review, that there will not be 36 sports in Brisbane.
