It just doesn’t feel like the New England Patriots‘ offense is good enough right now to win a Super Bowl, and there are a couple of reasons as to why. Drake Maye has been playing better recently, so he shouldn’t take the blame, and with A.J. Brown dealing with an injury to start the season, overreacting to what he’s done over the past two weeks would be completely unfair.
That’s also part of why New England’s offense hasn’t been great. Brown had just three catches for 27 yards in Week 6 against the New York Jets and three receptions on six targets against the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.
Simply put, that won’t cut it for this Patriots offense. While New England likely needs a defensive player, specifically someone who can come off the edge and make a big impact, don’t be surprised if they’re also interested in a wide receiver.
Recently reporting on some players who could be available, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested that the Los Angeles Chargers could be a team that helps the Patriots out.
They have Khalil Mack and Quentin Johnston, an edge rusher and a receiver who can help this team win.
“The Chargers would be one [candidate]. Obviously, they’re 0-6. They don’t have a game this week, and what’s looming coming out of their bye — the Rams, the Texans, the Ravens — you could very easily see them getting to 0-9. So would a Khalil Mack be available?
“That’s somebody that you could bring in to help your pass rush. I think stylistically he would really fit Mike Vrabel as a bigger, more rugged edge. Quentin Johnston’s another player that you could look at, somebody that may not have a future in Los Angeles,” Breer said, per NBCS Boston.
Mack has already been discussed many times, as a veteran who has been in the league for quite some time and continues to find success at a very high level. Johnston is a different player.
He obviously has had some drop concerns over the past few seasons, entering the league in 2023 after being selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of TCU, but he still put up decent numbers during that span. Johnston has posted at least 711 yards in each of the past two seasons, including finishing both seasons with eight touchdowns.
