LA28 unveils Olympic, Paralympic slogan — ‘Stars Align’ — in promo video

The slogan for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics suits the city that’s hosting the biggest Games in history: Stars Align.

LA28 unveiled the slogan through a 60-second video on Wednesday, backdropped by the Los Angeles native rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers song “Can’t Stop.”

“It’s not just our official slogan for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but it’s also a rallying cry and an invitation for athletes to compete — to come, bring their best and compete on the biggest stage on Earth,” said Alex Merchán, the LA28 Chief of Marketing. “Here, for locals, for volunteers across the country to come lend a hand and help deliver what will be a very historic Olympic and Paralympic Games, and of course for fans everywhere across this country and around the world to cheer on Team USA or their favorite athletes and be a part of this very special moment.”

It’s tradition for Olympic and Paralympic hosts to have a slogan or motto of two or three words or a phrase. Slogans became standardized starting with the 2006 Torino Games (“Passion Lives Here”), though Games before that also had unofficial ones.

Past slogans that served varying purposes include Los Angeles 1984’s “Play a Part in History,” Atlanta 1996’s “Come Celebrate Our Dream,” Salt Lake City 2002’s “Light the Fire Within,” Paris 2024’s “Games Wide Open” and Milan Cortina 2026’s “IT’s Your Vibe.” A full list is here.

In 2028, we will ride together, rise together and roar together. The world’s biggest fans and best athletes will come together in the city of dreams to unleash the next chapter of Olympic and Paralympic history.

When LA was bidding for the Games, its motto was “Follow the Sun.”

The overall Olympic motto is “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.” The Paralympic motto is “Change Starts with Sport.”

Merchán said “Stars Align” will be the “foundation for our storytelling” over the next two years.

Stars will align in LA in 2028 in many ways. Though LA is hosting the Olympics for the third time after 1932 and 1984, it will host both the Olympics and Paralympics for the first time. In 1984, the Olympic logo — called “Stars in Motion” — featured red, white and blue stars.

The LA Olympics will be the largest ever with a record 353 medal events.

The LA Games are shaping up to also be one of if not the greatest collection of global sports stars. It’s possible that active NFL players take part in the Olympic debut of flag football and possible that active MLB players take part for the first time.

Merchán said the Games are “set to be the biggest sports and entertainment event in history.”

“We need to define this moment,” he said. “We need to encapsulate this moment, and really looking at that and in our mission ahead of us, I think that’s a little bit of thinking on why we feel that ‘Stars Align’ is that best representation.”

The slogan comes on the heels of last month’s announcement that the Olympic torch relay in 2028 will be the first to visit all 50 states, and will start in Atlanta, the last U.S. host of a Summer Games.

Merchán said that upcoming announcements will include a list of places the torch relay will visit including all 50 states in the 100-day lead-up to the Games. Plus the design of the torch, the medals and the mascot.

It will be the first time that an Olympic torch relay visits all 50 states.
