The New England Patriots are currently in a wait-and-see approach regarding a potential deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver A.J. Brown.

Philadelphia is unlikely to trade Brown before June 2, as doing so would result in a hefty $43 million cap hit if the trade occurred before then.

It seems likely that if the Eagles decide to trade Brown after June 1, New England could be a potential destination. However, Patriots reporter Greg Bedard suggested that instead of pursuing a trade for Brown, New England should consider moving up in the first round of the NFL draft to select a wide receiver.

“I think it’s an interesting debate,” Bedard said on Tuesday during Patriots on CLNS. “I think I’ve made my position on A.J. Brown clear where I see him as a declining player. I’m all in on getting a younger guy that’s gonna grow with Drake Maye in this offense.”

If the Patriots are considering a trade for a wide receiver, moving up in the first round of the draft might be a better option than trading for Brown, who is likely to cost a first-round pick and will turn 29 this year.

New England should look to acquire a young receiver it can pair with Maye for years to come.
